About HKWPA

HKWPA Introduction

The Hong Kong, China Weightlifting and Powerlifting Association Limited (HKWPA Ltd.) is a member of Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC). We are the only weightlifting and powerlifting organization that recognized by Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and International Powerlifting Federation (IPF). We are responsible for organizing local and international competitions held in Hong Kong and selecting local athletes to join international competitions.

The Hong Kong Amateur Weighting and Bodybuilding Association, the former organization of HKWPA Ltd., was established on 30 October 1945. To separate from bodybuilding and the emerging fitness item powerlifting was added in 1989. In January 2002, it was formally renamed to “The Hong Kong Weightlifting and Powerlifting Association”. In March 2016, it registered as a limited company and renamed to “The Hong Kong Weightlifting and Powerlifting Association Limited”. In 2023, it has renamed to “The Hong Kong, China Weightlifting and Powerlifting Association Limited”.

Sports Introduction

Weightlifting
Weightliftingis an athletic discipline in the modern Olympic program in which the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates. Weightlifting tests aspects of human ballistic limits, the lifts are therefore executed faster than other strength movements. Weightlifting are commonly used by elite athletes in other sports to train for both explosive and functional strength.

Weightlifting including 2 disciplines:
1.) Snatch 2.) Clean & Jerk

Powerlifting
Powerlifting is good for both genders and all age groups, even the elderly & teenager. These sports not only can develop muscle strength and power and improves our body shape, increasing bone density and delay degeneration of bone and joint. It is a popular sport in European Countries & the United States. With the effort of our association, more people would like to participate in Power lifting sport. Powerlifting is getting more popular among elderly & teenagers. Our association always host the various Championships every year, such as Powerlifting Championships and Bench Press Championships, we have also organized various international event since 2008, e.g., Asian Bench Press Championships 2008 and Asian Powerlifting Championships 2015.

Application of membership
(1) We accept Institution and Individual membership application
(2) For Institution member application, we only accept Institution application letter in written form, including brief introduction of the organization, business registration/organization registration copy and ID card copy of the organization's representative
(3) For Individual member application, applicants only need to fill up the application form and return to our office.
(4) All supporting documentation along with the application will be processed promptly

Selection of Hong Kong China Team members and Funding Criteria
HKWPA will select athletes with outstanding performance or potential athletes to join Hong Kong China Team and participate in overseas competitions.

Registered Coach Criteria
The criteria of register as a HKWPA coach are as below:
(1) Permanent Member
(2) Had represented Hong Kong China to participate in IPF international championships in past five years
(3) Basic Coaching Certificate from Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) or relevant certifications
(4) Completed HKWPA Basic Coach Program and passed practical exam.
(5) Register coach must pay the register fee every year before 30th June. Failure to do so will result in being disqualified.
(6) Register coach must renew their certification in every four years (Per Olympic year) by submit the proof of continuous learning. Failure to do so will result in being disqualified.
(7) New register coach must complete HKWPA Basic Coach Program and passed practical exam.
(8) Coaches of HKWPA must certify that they have no criminal record.

Registered Referee Criteria
The criteria of register as a HKWPA referee are as below:
(1) Permanent Member
(2) Had participated in local championships or IPF championships at least four times in past three years, and had represented Hong Kong China to participate in IPF international championships in past three years
(3) Completed HKWPA Referee Course
(4) Passed the examinations in HKWPA Referee Course.
(5) Register referee must pay the register fee every year before 30th June. Failure to do so will result in being disqualified.
(6) Register referee must renew their certification in every four years (Per Olympic year) by submit the proof of continuous learning and perform referee duties in four local or IPF international competitions in past four years.
